Ecological Reserves in the Hudson Bay Area

Saskatchewan began the Representative Areas Network program which involved establishing the ecological reserves across the province in 1997 to conserve and protect unique ecosystems and landscapes across Saskatchewan, with a target of protecting 12 per cent of each of the province’s ecoregions.

There are several areas protected in the Pasquia and Porcupine Hills near Hudson Bay that have been designated as ecological reserves to protect their natural environment.

Some of the Ecological Reserves near Hudson Bay include:

  • Greenbush River Ecological Reserve
  • Fir River Ecological Reserve
  • Big Valley Lake Ecological Reserve
  • Smoking Tent Creek Ecological Reserve
  • Little Armit River Ecological Reserve
  • Upper Armit River Ecological Reserve
  • Lower Armit River Ecological Reserve
  • North Armit River Ecological Reserve
  • Red Deer River Ecological Reserve
  • Overflowing River Ecological Reserve
  • Pasquia River Ecological Reserve
  • Bainbridge River Ecological Reserve
  • Nitenai Salt Marsh Ecological Reserve
  • Rice River Canyon Ecological Reserve

These ecological reserves are representative areas that have been designated in Saskatchewan to preserve the various ecologically important areas throughout the province. Hudson Bay area is surrounded by the Boreal Forest and the Porcupine and Pasquia Hills. This allows for various ecosystems to flourish.
